The entire mountain on which this Jyotirlinga is situated is in the shape of Om, due to which this Jyotirlinga was named Omkareshwar. More than 100 small and big temples are located on this mountain. It is said that thousands of years ago, King Mandhata, the ancestor of Lord Shri Ram, had pleased Lord Shiva by doing penance on this mountain. As a result of which Lord Shiva appeared and asked for a boon. Mandhata asked for the boon of salvation and prayed to Lord Shiva that he should sit on this mountain for the welfare of the people. On his prayer, Lord Shiva remained seated there forever in the form of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga.

Narmada flows on one side and Kaveri river swells on the other side. Where the mountain ends, both these rivers meet, which is called Kaveri Narmada Sangam. Mother Narmada anoints the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva 24 hours a day. Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga is situated at a short distance from this Jyotirlinga, both of them are considered one and the same.
